Comments: The English oak is one of the most common trees in the Netherlands. A specimen can live for centuries and, in optimal conditions, reach a height of up to 40 meters. The tree attracts a great deal of biodiversity. Acorns were once used as pig feed. They are poisonous to horses and dogs due to the presence of tannins. For humans these tannins can cause a bitter taste and gastrointestinal problems. It is possible to extract the tannins from the acorns by soaking and rinsing them. The acorns can then be ground into flour and used in products such as acorn bread, acorn coffee, or acorn porridge. In Korean cuisine, acorns are used to make dotorimuk (acorn jelly). In the past, the English oak played a role in the leather industry. The bark contains tannic acid, which was used to process animal hides into leather. The wood is hard and strong, and easy to work.
